This course is designed to develop EVERYDAY communicative skills with an emphasis on listening and conversation, which will enrich a student’s personality and contribute to his or her social and intellectual growth.
A year’s course will include:
LANGUAGE SKILLS – this takes the form of impromptu or prepared talks. The aim is to develop exploration of ideas, questioning skills, planning and organisation and spontaneous response.
SPEECH EXERCISES – tongue twisters improve flexibility in the formation of speech and improve clarity of communication.
READING ALOUD – there is a strong emphasis placed on this skill. The aim is to improve interpretation skills and response to test. Own choice of literature is encouraged as it is a springboard to motivate conversation/discussion. Unison Reading has proved to be very popular with new students.
POETRY – students are introduced to a wide selection of material, and this should produce a better understanding of how one should interpret and read various forms.
DRAMA – this includes mime, improvisation, monologues and duos. This demands commitment, discipline and teamwork (for duos).
EISTEDDFODS – Students are encouraged to enter Eisteddfods putting into practice the various skills they have learned during class.
SPEECH EXAM – Students are also encouraged to prepare for an exam. This gives students a goal to work towards and they gain formal recognition of same by an outside body.
